Description

Fe2O3@SiO2, Size: 20 nm, Core size: 12 nm, Shell size: 8 nm, Positively-charged

Among various iron oxide phases, γ-Fe2O3 (Maghemite), α-Fe2O3 (Hematite) and Fe3O4 (Magnetite) are well-known nano-crystalline structures due to their magnetic properties, nontoxicity and chemical stability. These nanostructures have gained much interest in a broad range of disciplines such as magnetic recording systems (data storage), magnetic refrigeration, magneto-optical devices, magnetic resonance imaging, separation techniques and purification of biological molecules.

However, for specific applications, the bare magnetic nanoparticles need to be coated with a suitable material to improve their stability and biocompatibility due to the fact that the neat iron oxide nanoparticles possess relatively low colloidal stability and high nonspecific bindings. In contrast, SiO2-coated magnetic nanoparticles are hydrophilic and stable against biodegradation. Moreover, the other unique advantages such as easy surface modification/functionalization (due to the presence of reactive surface silanol groups) and possibility of recovery from the reaction mixture are of great interest for exploring the applicability of SiO2-coated magnetic nanoparticles in a broad range of applications.

Recently, silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles (γ-Fe2O3 and α-Fe2O3) have attracted much attention in biomedical applications including magnetic resonance imaging, magneto-relaxometry, magnetic cell separation and drug delivery. Their morphologies and well-controlled particle size would be important for employing these nanomaterials in biomedicine and biotechnology. More importantly, SiO2-coated Fe2O3 nanostructures are extensively used as sorbent for a wide variety of reactions because of their superior physicochemical properties. Also due to the promising catalytic specification and high surface area-to-volume ratio, these nanostructures are excellent supports for the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts such as metal complexes.
