Description

Fe3O4@SiO2, Size: 100 nm, Core size: 30 nm, Shell size: 70 nm, Negatively-charged

Fe3O4, known as magnetite, is an iron oxide that occurs naturally in iron sand minerals along with other iron oxides like hematite (α-Fe3O4) and maghemite (γ-Fe2O3). Fe3O4 possesses excellent optical, magnetic and catalytic properties with a broad range of biomedical and industrial applications.  Iron oxide nanoparticles are nanoscale crystals of iron with a considerably huge surface area and surface-to-volume ratio. Fe3O4 is a promising candidate for modification purposes in order to adopt even more properties with some specific applications. Among the numerous agents to modify Fe3O4 such as precious metals, polymeric materials and metal oxides, SiO2 (silica) has emerged as an excellent modifier to modify the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles. Specifically, silica serves as a composite shell to coat magnetic particles with the property of reducing any uneven agglomeration.

 Application Areas

There are many reports concerning the extensive biomedical applications of silica-coated Fe3O4 (Fe3O4@SiO2) in the literature. In this order, the biomedical applications comprise hyperthermia therapy, DNA genomic isolation, protein and cell detection and manipulation, contrast agent in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), magnetic separation of oligonucleotides, cells, and biomolecules and magnetically guided site-specific drug delivery systems. Moreover, Fe3O4@SiO2 has found industrial applications in magnetic refrigeration units, lubricants and bearings, optical memory devices, magnetic inks for bank checks, magnetic disk drive spindles, energy storage, magnetic seals in motors and devices such as gas lasers and blowers. Several methods have been suggested to synthesize Fe3O4@SiO2 namely modified Stöber, sol-gel method, one-pot process and ultrasound-assisted method.
